Trek 69er Singlespeed Bike - Friday 18th May, 2007.

As of Sea Otter earlier in the year, it has been fairly apparent that the humble Trek 69er single speed bike is to be joined by a couple of stablemates for 2008.

Anyone who has ridden a 69er, and there will only be a handful of you as they have only just arrived, will already know how cool these bikes are to ride and that's not taking how they look into consideration, which is SUB-ARCTIC!! They climb so well Trek had a couple of riders checking to see if a lower than 16t gear was being specced. Nope, a standard 16t was sitting there, all expectant like.
But what about the 69er Trek bike concept you ask. What about the big wheel, little wheel? Well, some of the comments aimed at 29ers is that yea, though the rolling over stuff easily is manifest and apparent, so is the initial reluctance to accelerate from a standing start. Well, that's where the Trek 69er bike comes in; by having the more easily accelerated mass of a 26" wheel your change of pace is more easily achieved, while still benefitting from the reduced rolling resistance of the big front wheel. The 29ers advantage of a bigger footprint is also maintained so cornering on a 69er is just as fast as a 29er.
All the physics of 26" v 29" rear wheel is just one of the advantages though; a lower standover height is also achievable with the smaller rear wheel as is the shorter chainstays and therefore stiffer BB area. This is pretty important for climbing as you grind away with the one gear on the currently available 69er single speed. Whatever your preference, 26er, 29er or 69er, it's worth having a blast on one of these bikes before making your mind up about them, if you haven't tried one how can you comment?
