Orange making a linkage bike? Surely we’ve been champions of the single pivot for, like ever? Yes we have, and we still maintain that the single pivot is the best mix of travel, longevity and looks on a mountain bike. However, for bikes with less than five inches of travel, those benefits are overshadowed by chunky swingarms, a compromise on pivot location and less than precise shock control over the shorter travel. With the ST-4, we wanted to produce the ultimate fast trail bike. Low centre of gravity, super supple shock action and short, tight chainstays to make the best climbing bike Orange has ever produced.
By using a linkage to control the long-stroke Fox shock, we can precisely control the leverage over the travel. The stroke is longer than we’d have room for in a single pivot, so the shock words smoothly throughout the 100mm travel, rather than having a ‘sweet spot’ in the middle. By keeping all the linkages low down in the frame, and with the advantages of short, tight chainstays, the ride on the ST-4 is taut and snappy, yet it’s balanced perfectly for a fork from a ‘just one more hill’ epic marathon 100mm to an all day ‘let’s do that run again’ 140mm. If you’re after a fast trail bike, one that climbs with agility and descends with confidence, you owe yourself a test ride on the ST-4.
