The design team for the new Thomson 31.8 stems had a tough goal: make a stem better than the Thomson Elite Road and Mountain Stems. Early tests showed us that our competitors’ 31.8 stems were heavier and weaker than Thomson Elite 25.4 and 26.0 stems. At Thomson our new stems were not done until they were stronger, lighter and longer lived than the legendary Thomson Elite. The new Thomson X4 for Mountain and X2 for Road allow you to realize the benefits of stiffer forks and stiffer 31.8 bars. They offer precise steering, tracking, and more control while riding, all wrapped up in a beautiful design. The new Thomson X2 will be available January, 2005. The X2 features a lighter, 2-bolt handlebar clamp that was originally conceived as a road-only design. In our testing we found that the 2-bolt handlebar clamp, with its patent-pending interlocking faceplate, is strong enough for mountain bike use, despite being 50 grams lighter than the Thomson Elite 26.0. The X2 is ride tuned for the road to eliminate harshness, and has a narrow front end that allows for easier use of aero bars. The Elite X2 is a breakthrough stem and will be a classic.
