Powertap SL Mavic Open PRO Wheel System with Software

This is a complete rear wheel to enable you to simply fit-and ride..

Using the PowerTap SL hub and a mavic open pro rim, fully built wheels are now available in either Campagnolo or Shimano..

How does the Powertap SL differ from the Powertap Pro. Quite simply it's lighter and sexier. The power-measuring unit is exactly the same, with the same level of accuracy as the Pro version, except that it is enclosed entirely within the carbon fibre hub body. This makes the SL practically Impenetrable to water as the power data can be transmitted through special 'carbon windows' deep within the hub itself, rather than through the unmistakable yellow cap on the outside of the Pro model. We don't want to sell the Powertap Pro short though, it very rarely lets in water.

There are a variety of Powertap SL options. If you ride a Mountain Bike, you will want to buy the 135mm 32-hole MTB hub. The 130mm ROAD hubs are available in 32, 28 and 24-hole options, and Shimano or Campagnolo. If you ride a Mountain Bike with disc brakes, you will have to wait a little while as the disc hub is currently under development.

The Powertap SL system is comprehensive. It offers all the functions that a traditional cycle computer has to offer as well as Heart Rate, received from a wireless chest strap (supplied) and of course Power (watts).

It is the accurate and reliable power output data supplied by this system that is revolutionising cycle training. With an accuracy level of +/- 1.5%, this system is as accurate as the considerably more expensive SRM system.

It is also considerably more versatile, because you can purchase an extra receiver system (£80) for every bike you own and then it is simply a case of dropping the back wheel into the bike you want to collect data from. You would also need to swap the handlebar-mounted computer from bike to bike, but that takes only seconds. It just clicks out like any regular cycle computer.

Why is collecting wattage data so important?

We will tell you in detail when you buy a system from us, but essentially, wattage data tells you and your coach everything. It tells you how effective you are. Heart rate monitors give an indication of how hard your body is working internally, but they don't tell you or your coach how effective you are - in other words, how you are actually performing. They also will not allow you to compare your fitness with others, which you can do directly with power data. Also, at a sustained power output, heart rate will drift upwards over time. Similarly, at a sustained heart rate, power output tails-off over time. Do you want your performance to tail-off? It won't if you train with power. Power data tells you precisely how you have achieved. Despite variations in environmental conditions, you will always have a measure of your form. Heart rate is considerably higher for a given intensity in hot/humid compared to cooler conditions. Average speed is lower if it is wet and windy or the MTB trail is muddy compared with still dry conditions. Your Powertap system will always tell you how you have performed.

Here is a summary of what you get with your Powertap Pro package: Computer, hub, heart rate strap, receiver with cadence sensor, mounting hardware, download cradle, software, instructions, Cycle-Ops training guide.
